Role Overview

We are looking for:

  • The Industrial Function is a transversal function of the SOLVAY Group. Group Engineering & Construction (GEC) is one of the Industrial Function Departments. Our mission is to support the Group Business Units (GBU) in their industrial activities.
  • We contribute to design, build and operate, in the most safely and efficient manner, their plants. We help them through continuous improvement programs to reach Excellence.
  • GEC is one the very few entities whose services are sold to GBUs on a pay-per-use base. All the GEC members and subcontractors’ activities, in all zones, are invoiced on a hourly base.
  • The GEC Estimating, Project & Internal Cost Controls department aims at:
  • Delivering optimized cost estimates and time schedules to the Business Units,
  • Providing efficient project controls (cost and schedule) giving to the Project Managers the vision of where the projects go
  • Controlling and invoicing internal costs
  • Editing reports and dashboards relevant to GEC activities

You count on you for:

  • GEC is recruiting, a controller for projects and internal costs
  • Projects Costs Controller’s mission (representing about 50% of the activity)
  • Track the committed costs, estimate the forecast in coordination with the engineering, procurement, and construction representatives
  • Track modifications, quantities variations and quantify the impact on cost (and schedule)
  • Based on the actual situation, works still to be done, equipment/material/services to buy, identify the remaining costs to be committed in order to estimate the final cost corresponding to each budget item
  • Give the Project Manager the right vision of the actual situation of the project and the forecast in order to identify deviation to take the right decisions
  • Issue monthly cost report to the project manager:
  • A detailed cost logbook : table with all the costs corresponding to each budget item
  • A summary table with the “Budgets”, the “Commitments”, the “To be committed”, the “Estimate At Completion” for the project Manager to communicate to steering committee.
  • The position reports operationally to the Project Managers
  • Internal Costs Controller’s mission (representing about 50% of the activity)
  • Design and organize the invoicing process in collaboration other Solvay functions/ Dept. (Finance, IT, GBUs…)
  • Continuously adapt the tools, the structure and the instructions to the evolution of the tools
  • Apply the right hourly rates on the base of the person and the recipient of the services.
  • Answer questions raised about invoices, answer questions from the internal or external audit. Explain the invoicing model, the margin, the way GEC is financed
  • Design and run performance analysis reports, extract monthly data from SAP in order to set up a dashboard that allows all stakeholders to understand activities and profitability
  • Analyze, with zones and Tax dept. the best invoicing schemes to avoid paying inappropriate taxes
  • Controlling activities:
  • Explain variances vs the budget
  • Check travel costs and whether they have correctly been re-invoiced

Main interlocutors:

  • GEC Management (GEC Director, heads of departments)
  • GBU, Functions controllers
  • SBS (Intercompany invoicing, back-offices (e.g. Lisbon…)
  • Project Managers
  • External companies controllers (e.g. Joint Ventures)

You will bring:

  • Engineer (or cadre with some technical background), you justify 10 years of experience in cost control ideally in an engineering and construction company in connection with the chemical or O&G industry.

Behavioral competencies:

  • You communicate easily with all the stakeholders
  • You are pro-active to gather all the required data to perform your job
  • You are able to defend your position and committed
  • You are autonomous and confident because of your experience

Experience in:

  • SAP transactions
  • Excel (advanced)
  • Google sheets (advanced)
  • Finance basics
  • Must know French and English (many contacts with other zones and financial controllers)
